HTC rolls out Evo 2.2 patch (for early adopters)

For those of you, like me, that jumped on the leaked Froyo 2.2 build for the HTC Evo that came out about two weeks ago, and couldnt then update to the "official" build, well there is good news!  Last night, sprint started to push out a the OTA update to get us to the official build.  What does this mean: Well the only difference between the two builds are....well.....I cant really find anything.  HTC said there was a 4g fix (i didnt have any problems using 4g on my un-official build) and a few other tweaks.

All in all HTC did an awesome job getting a patch out to us in under two weeks, pretty impressive if you ask me.  They could just let us sit here waiting for months on end.

To check for the update: Menu > Settings > System Update > HTC Software Update > Check Now

It should then prompt you that you have an update (if you are one of the early adopters only, people with the official build do not need an update)

Download said update and let it do its thing, take maybe 20-30 minutes to install and patch everything. Post back here with your questions, trip report or errors.

Moto Droid OTA Froyo update in tow

I am hearing from a few sources that the Motorola Droid is getting fitted with its official Over the Air (OTA) Froyo 2.2 update.  They have started rolling out late last night.  For everyone that downloaded a leaked version last week, I havent heard any reports that you cant get this version.  If you have the leaked version and cant update let us hear about it, maybe you will be the same quick treatment that HTC gave the Evo owners (who now have an OTA patch for theirs)

The Wonderful World of Minecraft

I stumbled upon Minecraft about a week ago.  Actually, saying I stumbled upon it is a bit of a misnomer, the game was basically being praised on every gaming forum I visit.  I had to see what all the fuss was about.  Be warned, this game is highly addictive.  Thankfully I had last week off and I must say I put almost as much time into this game as I would have my actual job.   The silly part is, there's absolutely no point to this game in it's current alpha state.  In Minecraft, you start out with nothing in either a nice warm tropical looking setting or a cold dark snow filled world which reminds me very much of Pullman, WA in the dead of winter.

EVO 4G Official Froyo Update available

HTC/Sprint just made the Evo 4G update officially available via the software update on the phone.  Make sure to go and get it!

Menu > Settings > System Updates > System Software Updates > Check now

For those of us that downloaded the leak last Friday/over the weekend might have to wait a day or two to get ours. I really doubt there is a difference between the build posted Friday and the build they are sending out tonight.  (There inst much they can do in a couple of days) But sprint said they will roll that out soon.

From reading other sites, it looks like the only diff between the .3 version (from friday) and the .6 version (from tonight) is something with WiMax.  But we should have the OTA update here in the next few days, if not tomorrow.

A great resource for Android users, The Android Dictionary

Android Central put together a great resource for Android users.  They call it the Android Dictionary.  It literally has every term you would ever think of in the Android world.  It is for sure something I will keep book marked in case I ever get any questions about an abbreviation, term or word in the Android world, and I recommend you find a place for this bookmark as well.  Hit the link below to search the Android Dictionary.

Droid and Droid X to get Froyo this summer

Well it looks like, according to some internal release documents, that the original Droid is going to get Froyo (android 2.2) this upcoming week and the Droid X is going to get it later this summer (late august probably, since its a similar port as the Droid will be).  And we know that the Droid 2 or whatever they are calling it, will ship with Android 2.2 when its release.  Its good to see all the Moto Droids are going to keep on top of the updates.  Once some OTA updates start to roll out, jump back here to give me your impressions, successes and horror stories (if there are any).

If I get some more official word/days I will make sure to update the post.  For now just sit and pray that Moto isnt pulling anyones chain....

Manual install for Android 2.2 (Froyo) Evo 4G instructions

Original Post: Click Here

The manual install for the Evo 4G upgrade to Froyo (Android 2.2) was just released. Obviously you can wait till tuesday to get your OTA version and not have to go through the steps below, or you can get your update 4 days early!

I went through the update without any error and I am not responsible for any problems, especially because its literally like 11 easy steps. Enjoy

Link to download Froyo: Click Here

  1. Download the above Froyo image and rename it to update (leaving the .zip file type intact)
  2. Attach the phone to the computer via USB and mount the SD card
  3. Drag the downloaded image (.zip file) to the root of the SD card, dont unzip it or anything.
  4. Unplug your Evo and Turn it off
  5. Hold down the Volume Up button and power on your Evo at the same time. This should bring up the boot select window.
  6. Select Bootloader (power button selects)
  7. Select Recovery (use the volume up/down buttons to scroll through the options)
  8. The phone will reboot again, dont worry, its going into the recovery menu
  9. At the screen with the red exclamation mark, hold the Volume Up and Power button again for a few seconds, until some blue text appears.
  10. Select "Apply sdcard:update.zip" from the options
  11. Give it 15 to 20 minutes and let it do its thing.  It will reboot a couple times and bam, Froyo on the Evo 4 days early!

Comment below with your success stores or questions.

Updates:
If you are in the Swype beta and using Swype and it stops working, then you need to uninstall it and reinstall it.  After that mine started working just fine.

Most other problems, like not finding location, camera not working, is pretty much resolved with a reboot of the phone.  (havent had the problems, but from what I have read thats the common fix)

Android 2.2 to hit the Evo 4G tomorrow?

A leak of an internal sprint release document detailing the upcoming Evo 4G Froyo (android 2.2) upgrade were leaked this morning.  Detailed in that document is the release plan for the Evo4G froyo upgrade, and all the other features and fixes that will come with it. Along with the 2.2 ROM being installed, we are getting a tasty amount of other goodies as well. Tentative date for the release is set for July 30th (tomorrow), if that holds true then we (owners of the 4G) should start to see some OTA notifications starting early tomorrow morning (document says mid afternoon).  More than likely this will be a staged roll out, but hopefully we can all be upgraded come the end of the weekend.  Continue reading for a list of all the features and fixes.

UPDATE: Offical release August 3rd. But eager users can opt in to get the update early Click here for manual install instructions

Ouch… Motorola and Verizon at it again

Chalk another one up for Motorola and Verizon.  They take another stab at Apple and the iPhone 4 reception issues.  I have yet to see some retaliation in Apples part for the first punch delivered when the reception issues with the iPhone 4 were first discovered.  Lets see if they come back with something at this second ad.  I will keep a tally, Moto/Droid: 1   Apple: 0
